[QOTW] Is social media unoriginal? [Written by Chasity Pryor]

Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. These are the four most used social media platforms, and while they do differ in ways that matter, they are also similar in ways that make them all unoriginal. A few months ago, Instagram took a page out of Snapchat’s book and introduced “Instastories.” Like Snapchat, users are able to post video clips and photos to their story for their followers to see. These stories are mostly used as a way to document their day. I’ve seen all kinds of things, from people on airplanes and laying on beaches, to people showing what they ate for breakfast. It’s all just a never-ending social feed. And, just when we thought that good ol’ Facebook was going to stay out of the social media war, Zuckerberg hit us with a completely unexpected update. Facebook Camera was introduced yesterday and there’s no need to explain it because it’s the same as Snapchat and Instastories, creative filters and all. Really, there’s nothing  more to it. All of these platforms are so adamant on one-upping each other that they are failing to see what’s really happening. Eventually, people get bored of the same thing. I, for one, am not impressed with the update. There’s nothing original about it, but the folks who are faithful users of Facebook have something to be excited about. What side of the fence are you on? Do you like Facebook Camera or are you tired of these social platforms’ unoriginality? Do you think that it’s an effective marketing technique to “copy” each other or should Instagram and Facebook have left Snapchat’s design alone?

Basically, is social media unoriginal?
