[Karlito’s Korner] Epic Records May Be The Last Label Standing.

Epic Records, a division of Sony Music, housed famous artists over the decade. These artists include Luther VandrossTLCThe Isley’sMariah Carey, and Michael Jackson. Legendary executive, Antonio “L.A.” Reid, who stepped down from his position as chairman of Def Jam records, took over as CEO of Epic in 2011. He clearly came with plans to execute, and that he did. In the last 5 years, Epic has become a powerhouse with some of the most important acts in the game. I am really impressed with their Hip-Hop/R&B roster. I made a short list of the acts I am most intrigued by.

diddy

  • Diddy– After 10+ years under the Interscope umbrella, Puffy moved his Bad Boy imprint to Epic last year, reuniting with L.A. Reid once again from their days at Arista.rick ross
  • Rick Ross– After his solo deal with Def Jam expired along with MMG’s distribution deal with Atlantic, Renzel moved his empire to Epic in early 2016.gotti
  • Yo Gotti –Though Gotti has had three unsatisfactory partnerships with labels, he gave Epic records a chance in 2013 and has been a force to be reckoned with ever since. He recently released “Down In the D.M.” and it is the biggest song of his career and his first platinum single.future
  • Future –Though he has been signed to Epic since 2011, Future has grown into a household name with a monster collection of singles and a work ethic that’s not match-able right now. It seems Future has no plans of slowing down; he’s included in the Summer ’16 tour with Drake and has plans to release “Dirty Sprite 3” later this year.tink
  • Tink– The new female rap phenomenon from Chicago has planned to release her new album this year through Timbaland’s Mosely Music Group, which distributes through Epic as well.

Among the many acts under the Epic umbrella, these five have the most attention right now and may be instrumental in the progress of Epic‘s reign. In this free for all world of releasing music, it will be interesting to see how Epic will platform these artists. Future and Gotti seem to be doing well. I can only imagine what’s next.

Coming Soon on Epic:

  • MMG- Self Made 4
  • Puff Daddy-No Way Out 2
  • Tink- Debut Album
  • French Montana –Mac N Cheese 4
  • DJ Khaled- Major Key
  • Future- An abundance of music I bet

Hip Hop 4eva,

Karlito Freeze
