The elephant in the room has been the lack of diversity within the Oscars for years. Some have publicly expressed their opinions about the matter, but not like this year. This year’s nominee announcements took the cake as actors from films such as Straight Outta Compton and Creed didn’t receive nominations although it is obvious that these films held their weight with talent and sales. Fans were outraged, but some people replied to that outrage by saying, “Why are you surprised, the Oscars is not for us.” Us, referring to blacks. The issue is that almost all of the Oscar nominees were Caucasian or not black. Shortly the hashtag, #OscarsSoWhite stormed the timelines of Twitter and The Academy defended their votes. People of Hollywood such as Jada Pinkett and Spike Lee brought on the idea of boycotting the Oscars and while some people of Hollywood stand for it, there are some who think the idea is foolish. Why do we care to seek validation of our talents from whites? Why don’t we start our own awards show similar to the Oscars? These are some questions that frequented different social media platforms. Stacey Dash and Whoopi Goldberg are two people who don’t think highly of the boycotting idea. While some think it will make a statement, some think it encourages segregation even more. Do you think that Boycotting the Oscars will bring diversity in to The Academy‘s votes? Do you think that if enough people stand behind this movement that it will have an affect?
