There’s been many eyebrows raised at child star, Raven Symone after this episode of OWN TV‘s Oprah:Where Are They Now episode snippet surfaced the web. Many of us are like “Eh, whatever it’s not that serious.” while others took her straightforward commentary to heart. What are thoughts on what she expressed in this interview? Did she speak for some of you or do you think she went too far?
Man! I agree 100% with her…. No one needs to know my sodium content so why are you labeling me!? But it’s crazy, I said that same thing to my co-workers just yesterday (btw I hadn’t seen this interview until now) about the whole ‘African-American’ thing. We are already judged on things we control about our selves, I can’t stand being sub categorized about things I can not.
I feel you, I agree
The thing I cannot wrap my mind around is why value one label over another. Why is it better to be labeled American rather than African American? Is it because of the stigma that comes with being African American or is she simply under the impression that she transcends race? I do not understand the point she is trying to make and I’m not sure if she does either.
I can’t speak for her but for me it has nothing to do w/ any stigmas. People who have an hyphenated nationality can often make a connection with the place that they came from (ie. Mexican-american, Italian-American, Asian-American) where as for me this country and land is all I know. So to give me a title based solely on my skin tone/complexion is unfair to me.
